Fredericksburg, Viginia

Today Barbara and I went to Belmont which was the home of Gari Melchers an American painter who was very successful during his life time (http://www.umw.edu/gari_melchers/). He produced a large body of work during his life time and after his wife died in 1955 she left the house and property and all it’s contents to the common wealth of Virginia. So the house contains all of the furniture, paintings and personal items from their life in Virginia. No pictures of inside the house but here are a few from the grounds and gardens.

From there we went down town to the James Monroe Museum. A small museum that covers James Monroe’s early life from before during and after the revolutionary war. On our way to the museum we walked past some interesting houses and a Mason cemetery.

Tomorrow will be the last day of our trip and we should be home sometime in the afternoon.

Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden

Today Barbara and I went to Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden (http://www.lewisginter.org/) for the day. As luck would have it the glass artist Hans Godo Frabel’s (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frable) exhibit was at the garden. This is the same exhibit we saw in February of 2009 and it was all we saw then and more. We just loved seeing it all again. I took over 250 pictures and had a very hard time choosing ones to put in this album.

In the children’s garden they had a field of pinwheels to represent all the children helped by Virginia’s Prevent Child Abuse program. When the wind blows and the pinwheels started to spin it really was impressive. i do not know if it is the new camera or the fact that I could get closer to the sculptures but I got some good pictures of the detail in the glass.

After leaving the garden we drove to Fredericksburg and went to the visitor center in town and Barbara picked up some brochures. Then it was time to go to the hotel. After a rest at the hotel we went to go to dinner. The place we had a coupon for was closed for a private event so we had to go back downtown Fredericksburg and find the Capital Ale House. When we got there we very lucky and found a parking spot just a few doors away from the restaurant. We were there during Firkin Friday, a firkin refers to a 1/4 barrel that are used to store beer in. Every Friday they open a firkin of beer at 5PM and serve the unfiltered and un-carbonated beer from it. Today’s was a porter which was excellent.

On the Way Home

First an update on the roof. Last Saturday we had a full day of rain and a heavy down pour that night and no more leaks. So what the roof contractor told me to do worked.

Late last week I developed a cough at night that was very annoying then Barbara got it earlier this week (this is important later in the saga). On Monday and Tuesday we started packing the car and getting the trailer ready to be shut up for the summer. On Wednesday morning we finished packing the car (just as full as the last trip) and left the trailer around 10AM. Barbara was not feeling well and we did not think if she was having problems with allergies going to a zoo and garden would be a good idea so instead we changed our hotel reservations and just headed up I-95 instead of going to Atlanta. Today Barbara is felling better so after a long drive to Colonial Heights, Virginia we went out to dinner at the Olive Garden across the street and are planning to go to a garden tomorrow and a short drive to Fredericksburg with a two night stay so we can explore that part of Virginia. The good thing about this is we will get the room for two nights with bonus points and we will go through Washington DC on Sunday morning.

No pictures yet but stay tuned.

Sunrise over Indian River Lagoon

This morning as I rode to the gym on my bicycle I took a small detour and got some pictures of the sunrise over The Indian River Lagoon. I stopped by one of the benches in the park and took about 33 pictures and then as I got back on my bike and turned toward the Gym I looked in my mirror and saw the sun. I looked around and had to stop and take 3 more pictures. Let me know what you think.

Our Easter 2010

Our Easter this year started early with a drive out to the beach before sunrise to take some pictures. The sunrise did not disappoint, there were some clouds on the horizon which made for a very colorful sunrise. I took just over 100 pictures here are 23 of my favorites.

At 11:00 AM Barbara and I put on our bathing suits and went for a morning swim.

IMG_1930After lunch Barbara and I went to McKee Botanical Garden (http://www.mckeegarden.org/). We went there last February and thought we would go and visit again. The Easter bunny had been there and hidden little plastic eggs all over the garden for the children to find. Here are some pictures of our visit.

Roof Complete (I hope)

Well yesterday I put the second elastomeric coating on the roof so now I just have to wait for a rain storm to see if it leaks or not (lets hope it is not). If it does not rain soon I may just go up on the roof with a hose and soak the roof real good and see if I can make it leak. Well here are some pictures of the finished project. Oh and I took the cinder block down off the roof, hope it wasn’t important.
